Split air con systems – where, when and what to use them for

The split system comes as either a “cooling only” model, or a reverse cycle unit that can be used for both heating and cooling.

Considering its focus to heat smaller areas such as one room within the house, it is proven to be very energy efficient. A single unit is, therefore, less expensive to buy and have installed, though this may slightly change if you want to install one in every room. Plus, running costs on split systems are generally lower than for a ducted air con, thanks to their lower energy demands. They also tend to be quieter than the ducted heaters, especially the latest models.

A split system is very flexible, as it can basically be installed directly onto the walls in any location within the house. If your unit requires repairs, it is generally cheaper, easier and faster to fix, service or replace due to its relatively small size.

Ducted air con systems – where, when and what to use them for

The ducted system is also known as central heating, and is a lot more complex than the other heating types. It can be run by a gas driven heater or a reverse cycle air conditioning system.

While split systems are used to heat a single room, ducted systems are designed to meet your entire home’s heating needs. Although they require more energy in order to provide a large amount of heat, they may be cheaper to run for the long term. This is mainly due to the zoning feature, allowing you to set and control the temperature in each area of your home via the thermostat or even turn it off in unused spaces.

A ducted system is also very discreet as the unit is installed out of sight (typically in the roof) and you can only see the vents where warm air comes from, making you feel nice and cosy. If noise also weighs a lot in your decision-making process, then a ducted system is a great choice for quiet and smooth climate control option.
